New Orleans Botanical Garden

Opened in 1936, the garden was originally a rose garden. Though very popular when it opened, interest was starting to be lost on the public in the ‘40s, and continued until the ‘80s, when it was completely renovated to bring it back to prominence. This helped out the garden a lot and by ‘90s many new sections and features had been added. When Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, leaving the garden beneath 3 feet of water for 2 weeks, up to 90% of the plants in the garden were killed. Since then, a remarkable amount of volunteers have helped rebuild the garden, and it flourishes once again, offering classes on planting, and all of the concerts, garden shows and other celebrations that have been held in the past.
