Although Mardi Gras is not exclusive to New Orleans (other cities famous for large Mardi Gras celebrations include Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; and Sydney, Australia), it is arguably more famous there than anywhere else in the world. “Mardi Gras” (trans: “Fat Tuesday”) generally refers to the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday in Christian culture, although its roots can be traced back further than that. Over time, the term has come to mean general period of time leading to Ash Wednesday. Since Ash Wednesday marks the first day of Lent, during which, practitioners are to essentially cut back on worldly goods and desires, Fat Tuesday is their last chance to get all the fun stuff out of their system beforehand.
For New Orleans, Mardi Gras is one of the wildest, most colorful, and most fun parties you will ever attend, including massive parades, people in full costume, flambeaux torch carriers to light the parade path and thousands of your closest friends around you trying to get a better glimpse of the parade, and trying to collect the traditional beads that float-riders will toss at you.
